I came across Kevins old TRUzine website from 1999 and found some old crap with me in it. Some photos, somes articles and a lot of really bad website design.
Click Read More to check out the first ever article I wrote for the internet and a few photos of me riding.
My friend Kevin used to be into making Zines. The one he put a lot
of effort into was TRUzine. This was all the way back in May of 1999.
He setup a small website on Geocities, as well all have done, filled it
with animated gifs and ugly buttons and asked us to send him photos and
articles to fill the tiny online mag.
We all made an effort,
but quickly lost interest. Amazingly enough the site is still there
though. I was there today taking in some memories and copying old
pictures. I found a old article I wrote. I would have to bet it was
probably the first article I ever wrote and published to the internet.
It was pure shit, but even the stuff I write now is pure shit so it doesnt really matter.
Here is the article.
As I browse the Internet for the first few times I ponder, " Is this the next big thing?" Many things flash through my feeble mind, So much information, so little time. The main dilemma smacks me right in the face; do I stare at porn for hours on end? Do I read up on the Civil War Homepage? Do I join into a chat room to instigate a verbal barrage of mindless, boring conversation? I know that it will eventually lead to numb fingers, sore eyes, and no further knowledge of anything besides that some person calling themselves BMXgod is dissing me for riding a Standard bike. How can I use this device called "The Net" appropriately? Are we in fact using the Internet to further broaden our feeble brains or are we using it to bitch for hours on end about useless drivel that will not affect us in any positive or negative way. I wonder if the same thing was said about television when it first came out, or even the telephone. Maybe all new inventions are not used to their full potential for many years. Look how far automobiles have come since their invention so many years ago. I type in BMX on my overpriced and newly outdated computer and hope to find something cool. I am given many choices, but nothing seems appealing. Why would I surf for hours on end to see some guy I don’t know jump a tiny step-up jump? Why would I keep surfing to find the Schwinn web page when I know damn well that I will most likely find a page that is trying to sell me clothes and bikes through a computer monitor. Any self-respecting BMXer would never buy a pair of pants over the computer that cost $70 bones. I stop my fingers on the keyboard and look over at my bike sitting just barely out of view. Why am I wasting my precious time with this senseless finger tapping when I could be outside trying to do something new on my bike? At best I could be sleeping, rejuvenating my weary bones. At worst I could be spending time with somebody special, be it a girlfriend, a wife, or even just a friend. One on one contact… Living… making sense out of our life and our existence on this tiny planet. Are we broadening our horizons by spending countless hours on the computer every night or are we shutting ourselves out of the outside world. Look down at your skin… are you pale white? Do you ever see the sunlight besides when you go to the office supply store for more paper? Absorb knowledge any way you can, just make sure that you don’t put blinders on and only use one method constantly. It is a big and beautiful world outside, and it is time for me to get up out of this uncomfortable office chair and into an uncomfortable BMX seat. Please excuse me while I go chip some concrete and hope the police won’t harass me. Hope to see you outside.
