I bought a iBook on eBay for 250 bucks and immediatly had to upgrade it due to a rare sickness I have. I cannot EVER leave well enough alone.
I upgraded the ram, dvd drive and the hard drive in one swoop. Read on to see the high speed video of the process.
I initially intended to just swap out the old cdrom with a new DVD rom so I could upgrade to OSX 10.4.8 instead of the existing 10.2.x. Newer versions of OSX only come on DVDs and I was not having any luck doing some of the usual workarounds I found on the web to install 10.4 on a computer without a dvd. The easy fix was to buy a replacement on eBay and swap it out.
After buying it and sitting back to wait I read over some of the tutorials and saw what I just got myself into. Swapping out anyhting on a 12" G3 iBook was no picnic and would take at least one hour to do. Well, I have done scarier stuff and this was a nice project to work on.
There are tons of teardown tutorials online and I decided that this was one of the rare times I should actually use one. The best one by far is at iFixit.com.
The whole process is pretty dull, so I tried to spin it and do something fun with it. I made a video of the entire procedure then sped it up. Now the entire upgrade took less then 3 minutes to watch.
