I have been playing around with a variety of Media Centers lately. I started off with LinuxMCE and failed miserably. After a few different systems I settled on WinXP and GBPVR and was relatively happy for a while. I had a few features that refused to work right so it was not making me happy. I then saw a new LinuxMCE video and figured it was time to give it another attempt. After all, it had 2 updates and a major revision since I failed, it had to be better by now. This article shows my 2nd attempt at making LinuxMCE work.

As if setting up a brand new computer, operating system, and various network tweaks wasn't enough, I decided the basic BitTorrent computer box I built wasn't robust enough for me. I really wanted multiple users and a better interface. I wanted a total replacement for Azureus and uTorrent clients on the individual computers. I wanted something central everybody could use and contribute to.
Unfortunatly this meant I had to install Ubuntu server and I was going to be doing far more terminal typing then GUI clicking.

I recently saw a write up on Digg about how to make a dedicated machine do nothing but download .torrent files. That seems pretty stupid to me until I really thought about it. With this setup I can have the torrent box use a different internet connection, but still keep it on my network. I can crank the share speeds up and not affect VPN, VNC or other things I use.
Now I have one in my server rack and I love it. This was the first build of this server. After using it I decided I needed a bit more features and rebuilt it in a different way. So, this article is for the "simple way" and the next article will be for, "the slightly harder way".

Ninja fever has hit the internet.
I have no idea why.
If you want to participate you will most certainly need a ninja mask and Vern Reid is our man.

Fed up with your DVR/Tivo or any commercially sold setup device? I was, so I decided to finally suck it up and build my own with a old PC. Now all I had to do was settle on what OS to use. Should I use Micrapsofts Media Center edition Operating system? Should I go Linux? Is this going to turn in a terrible waste of my time?
I will review all of the major contenders for media center software and give you my experiences with them.

Have you ever wanted to turn your moderately priced wood glue into a useless glob of waste? OF COURSE you have. Here's how to do it.
First start off with a desire to accomplish something that requires glue. Make a list of things that need glued and gather all the items up together so they are all within easy reach. Now that they are all nearby you can glue everything quickly, easily and without waste.
Then find the glue.
You know you have it somewhere.
Is it in the basement? Possibly in the craft room? Naw, it must be in the tool box.

I was inspired by an Instructable I read recently. (original Instructable here ) Neodudeman talks about his Sony remote control being underpowered. Instead of spending cash on a Radio Shack repeater, he decides that a little added boost via a mirror could do the trick.
I was skeptical. I had a similar issue myself, in that when the remote was on the table I had to pick it up to aim it at my DVR/DVD/TV. Well that was too much work for my frail body. This is how I fixed it.

Like a lot of computer geeks I have a lot of extra
"stuff" in boxes, closets, garages, corners, drawers and wherever. Most
of the time that works out just fine as long it's out of site, out of
mind.
Cables however are never easy to store in boxes. The woman decided it
was time for me to get the cables out of the boxes and off the floor,
and this was what I did.

I was reading online about adding lighting behind your TV and or monitor to alleviate eye strain when using either device. It was a cheap enough project and I really like how it looks.
